Signs of a Failing Stop/Start Battery

Also known as Idle (intelligent) Stop-Star systems or just ISS, if your vehicle is built after 2010 or later and meets euro 5 standard or above you most likely have Stop/Start system and EFB or AGM type car battery. With a Stop/Start vehicle, there are a few key warning signs that your car battery’s life is coming to an end. It’s important to pay attention to the health of your vehicle to avoid being stranded with a dead battery.

  • Slow Engine Crank

  • Stop/Start won't kick in and struggle to restart the car

  • i-stop or Engine light stays on

  • Clicking Noise When Trying to Start The Car

  • Dim Headlights

  • The Engine Backfires

  • Smell Of Sulfur from leaking battery

  • Corrosion of Battery Terminals

  • Swollen Battery Case

Types of Stop/Start Batteries

Absorbent Glass Mat Battery (AGM)

An AGM battery is an advanced version of lead acid battery. Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery (also known as dry cell, sealed lead acid by different manufacturers) are similar to wet batteries, except the electrolyte is being held in the glass matts, as opposed to freely flooding the plates, which increases its regenerative power. They are maintenance free, fast charging, with high power output, improved cycle life, excellent deep cycle properties and have a high cranking ability – even with a low state of charge. They can also be used with regenerative braking systems – a system in electric and hybrid vehicles where energy created through braking with electric motors is diverted to recharge the battery. These advanced systems need to quickly recharge the battery in bursts, needing very high rates of charge acceptance.

Vehicles designed with AGM batteries should only have their battery replaced with another AGM battery all accessories on the vehicle like aircon, braking systems and lights have been designed specifically with this type of battery in mind.

Ehanced Flooded Battery (EFB)

Enhanced Flooded Batteries (EFB) batteries are, like AGM batteries, lead-acid batteries designed to meet the power and cycling requirements of entry-level Stop Start systems. An EFB battery is an improved version of the standard lead acid battery. It’s enhanced design gives it the ability to provide constant power to all car electrical loads, including when the vehicle is idle. The main benefits of EFB batteries are improved charge acceptance and greater cycle durability when operating in a low charge state.

EFB batteries have a greater number of charging cycles and can provide more than double the partial and deep discharge performance in comparison with conventional batteries. They are often installed in vehicles with simple automatic start/stop systems and due to their superior performance, batteries with EFB technology are also increasingly used as replacements for conventional lead-acid batteries. EFB batteries should only be replaced with another EFB or an AGM battery.

Can I replace a Stop/Start Battery with a Flooded Battery?

A "stop/start" battery is a type of battery that is used in vehicles with a start-stop system. This system automatically shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and restarts it when the driver wants to move again. The stop/start system is designed to improve fuel efficiency by reducing the amount of time the engine spends idling. The battery in a stop/start system needs to be able to provide enough power to start the engine quickly and reliably, even after the engine has been shut off for a short period of time.

If you put a standard battery in a stop/start will lead to faults and possible damage to the entire electrical system. It can still start the vehicle but won’t be able to withstand the frequent charging and discharging that occurs as the start/stop system operates. This type of technology requires an enhanced battery to cover this extra load. Vehicles with the I-stop feature need either an EFB (Enhanced flooded battery) or AGM (Absorbed glass mat) stop/start battery. These batteries are designed to be more durable and have a longer lifespan than standard batteries. Stop/Start batteries can start up to 18,000 times per year compared to 750 for a standard battery.
